Welcome to 17 Wing Golf Course!
As
current Club President, I would like to welcome you to the
17 Wing
Golf Club. The course was established
through the efforts of a few avid golfers at 17 Wing in 1988. Since that
time, the Golf Club has been continuously upgraded through the efforts of
its growing membership to make the course a truly enjoyable playing
experience. 17 Wing Golf Club has approximately 500 members that are
comprised of Regular and Reserve military members, civilian DND employees,
retired military members and long time civilian members.
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to your current

The summer of 2008 proved to be a great year
for golf. The executive and clubhouse staff will do their best to make
the 2009 season another great year on the course. Currently there are
several vacant positions that need to be filled for 2009 golf season,
including Vice President. If you are interested in volunteering for
this worthy effort, please contact one of the Executive members. Each
and every spring the club organizes a volunteer work party to help get
the season started. Last year was a great success with a large turnout
of members out helping the club clean up the course and getting started
for the season. This year we will once again be asking for your help
sometime in early May, 2009.
The course is always open to green
fee players, however you should call to ensure tee times are available.
Also the course can used to host your own personnel tournaments, contact the
club manager Darlyne Fathers for availability and rates.
Efforts continue to try and improve
the golf course and facilities. There will be several new changes and
other developments you should be aware for the 2009 season;
-
Hole#2 - Thanks to the hard work of our Greens Keeper, Allan O’Dowd late
last summer, we will have a second teebox, back and slightly north of
the existing teebox. Hopefully this will be ready to play this spring
and will certainly add to the challenge on this hole;
-
Hole#3
- Sometime before the end of March, a contractor will begin installing
poles and hanging 200 feet of netting along the left/western side of the
fairway. 17 Wing is funding this in order to protect the parking lot
behind Building 21. The Club is providing six telephone poles to help
offset the costs. On the east side of this fairway, the nets the Club
installed three years ago are in rough shape. Trying to get them fixed
has been problematic, so we will have to look at spending some money on
this in the coming year;
-
New green Hole#3
– In September of last year, further ground testing was done to reassess
the suspected contaminated areas. The good news is the amount of
contaminated ground on or near the new green is less than previously
suspected. Now we have to wait for the Wing Engineers to approve a
reclamation plan and implement it. Once this is done, we can look at
getting this green into playing shape and the new back teebox for
Hole#4; and,
-
Hole #4 – The Air Division
Headquarters in Building #25 is in the midst of a major project to
renovate the entire building. To support this, a small trailer complex
is being established north of the building which will be present for up
to five years. This is in the area where a parking lot had been up
until 2005. Hopefully, this complex will not interfere with play;
-
Hole #6 - This year we will be
increasing the size of the # 6 green. The #6 hole is 585 yard par 5
usually played into the wind with a very narrow green that runs away
from the fairway.
In the Clubhouse, the Handicap
computer will be back in operation along with the Suggestion Box.
Suggestions must be signed by the member to be accepted and actioned by the
Executive. Another improvement coming soon will be updating of our internet
Website by acquiring our own domain name and improving the functionality of
the actual page. More to follow on this.
Once again, welcome to the 17 Wing
Golf Course. On behalf of the other members of your Executive Committee, I
hope to see you on the golf course soon.
